The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits in a utility space, basement, or closet. These two units are the core of what a contractor installs.

A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, connecting them through an exterior wall. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A contractor also ties the new equipment into the existing electrical supply at the disconnect box and the main panel.
