The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a utility space, basement, or closet and is the indoor half of the refrigerant circuit. These two units are what a homeowner is buying when they buy central air.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, connecting them through the wall or floor. The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the home's air and tells the system when to run. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor coil to carry away the moisture it pulls from the air.
